Painting, sculpture
Yuna Denis, born in 1993 in Douarnenez (FR), explores painting through its haptic and emotional qualities. This quest for sensitivity takes shape through the experimentation she implements in each of her works. She reflects on the meaning of contemplation and plays with the emergence of shapes, colours and multiple layers. The term ‘layers’ echoes the mineral composition of the Earth, as well as the many episodes that have shaped history. She applies layers of paint in the form of a palimpsest, seeking to reveal the metamorphoses that make up her work. Her practice is an open space for her to navigate through personal, memorial, historical and collective narratives. She hammers, sands, paints, coats, damages, rubs, scratches, extinguishes, mistreats, cracks, fragments, polishes, dyes, etc. metals, fabrics, wood and other surfaces, which is a great source of pleasure for her.
"My gestures are layers, sometimes minimal, sometimes maximised and then inevitably erased. Using a variety of techniques, I erase, alter, patinate and shape surfaces. These surfaces experience everything they can receive. In this way, they are the fruit of time. Sometimes it takes me several years to consider and finalise the application or removal of my gestures. The hollowed-out surfaces are laden with all these disappeared layers."
Yuna works and lives in Brussels, Belgium.
