My approach began as a result of questioning the mechanisms of memory, the mental selection of it. What we want to remember and how photography modifies and influences the way we remember things. This research evolved into philosophical questions related to the human condition. Little by little, with time, I learned to identify the subjects that I wanted to explore, that fascinate me the most, and that guide me in my research.
Born in Mexico City in 1982, Ilan Weiss moved to Brussels in 2006 where he began his career. Mastered at Kask in Ghent in 2020. Before dedicating himself to the visual arts, Weiss began his career as a fashion and comercial photographer. His practice has evolved towards a deeper philosophical research. By trying to understand what beauty in the image really is for him, he has succeeded in exploring universal human aspects. What he can't express in words, seems clearer to him in this research of the image, and what it ends up reflecting back to himself.
